Ethical Considerations for EBP

My understanding of the nurses contribution to ethical conduct of research and implementation of research findings has changed since completing the ethics assignments. I was aware of the importance of research and implementation of research findings but I am more clear on how to go about finding reliable research articles and evidence. Finding and providing evidence behind why you are doing something as a nurse is so important. How nurses have evolved in terms of research ethics is amazing. In the movie Miss Evers’ Boys, Nurse Eunice Evers is chosen to facilitate a program intended to slow down syphilis rates among African Americans in rural Alabama. During this study, it becomes twisted into a human experiment where patients are denied much needed medicine due to the stigma around syphilis and the African American community. Years later she testifies to tell what really happened during these times. Miss Evers’ kept her agreement of commitment to the project and carrying out care. Although, she violated the Nursing Code of Ethics when the study changed from the original agreement of giving them treatment to giving the boys a placebo treatment. I think it is important for us to be aware of the historical evolution and principles of research ethics because we should learn from past mistakes and aim to be the best nurses possible. This course has prepared me because I am more aware of how to participate in the ethical conduct research, quality improvement and evidence based practice initiatives because I know how to find resources and follow through with something the ethical way.
