Building Task Homework for October 4

Significance:

“…a model or representation of discourse situations, a rhetorical frame, that helps readers account for the motives underlying textual acts and their outcomes.” (Haas 47-47)

This is an example of significance because these rhetorical frames have a certain time and place and by having a clear definition on where they should go. Rhetorical frames have a defined place so this just proves it.

“Rhetorical reading- that is, recognizing the rhetorical frame that surrounds a text, or constructing one in spite of conventions which attempt to obscure it…” (Haas 49)

Rhetorical reading is a definite definition which in this case is an example of significance. These are things in life “that are”. We just know these things and rhetorical reading has a defined definition.

Practices:

“…a model or representation of discourse situations, a rhetorical frame, that helps readers account for the motives underlying textual acts and their outcomes.” (Haas 47-47)

A practice is something that is an activity so in other words, telling someone or lecturing on linguistics, is an example of practices. These are things that are used to expand on language and by using a model or representation, this can help clarify that.

Identities:

Relationships:

“Knowledge of contexts will aid a readers’ interpretation, and indeed, knowing something about cultural and historical contexts can reveal a great deal about discourse participants, and vice versa.” (Haas 48)

We use language to signal what sort of relationship we have because in order to have a certain kind of relationship we try to use certain things to draw them in, which in Haas’ case is knowing something culturally and historically.

Politics:

Connections:

“Knowledge of contexts will aid a readers’ interpretation, and indeed, knowing something about cultural and historical contexts can reveal a great deal about discourse participants, and vice versa.” (Haas 48)

We can use language to make connections through knowing something about cultural and historical contexts. In order to make a connection, we have to make it happen. It doesn’t just happen so by relating to something else it will aid the reader.
