Gee claims that Discourse “… are ways of being in the world; they are forms of life which integrate words, acts, values, beliefs, attitudes, and social identities as well as gestures, glances, body positions, and clothes.”, so by including and doing these things in life, it makes you more exposed to Discourse. Discourse is something that with time becomes easier for most people. You can apply ways of Discourse in your academic life, focusing on science, by including the called definition Gee gives us. Also, by using the IMRaD Cheat sheet, you can break down the process behind a strong scientific paper. By introducing and explaining why your topic is important, using methods tp prove it, reporting and commenting on your results effectively, and discussing them with clarity helps to effectively show your scientific statement.

Haas’ article relates to discourse as well. She states “A great number of studies of science have focused on discourse – conversations and lab notes as well as conference presentations and formal articles…”, which relates to Gees article on Discourse. Throughout her article, she talks about her study on Eliza. She studied the growth of her scientific writing throughout Eliza’s college career. She found that with time her writing became gradually better and it is commonly this way with college students, especially in the Biology field.
